Bolsonaro's environmental budget cuts cause turmoil in his Cabinet of Ministers

Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil, recently announced a major decrease in the budget of the department of environment. This announcement came only a day after president Bolsonaro had made contrary pledges in the climate summit for world leaders led by the president of the United States, Joe Biden. Several cabinet ministers have warned the president of the consequences of his decision.

Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil, recently announced a major decrease in the budget of the department of environment. This announcement came only a day after president Bolsonaro had made contrary pledges in the climate summit for world leaders led by the president of the United States, Joe Biden.

It was no surprise that environmental organisations, the environmental department itself and also other nations were shocked by this decision. However, now also several cabinet ministers - in addition to the minister of environment -  have warned the president of the consequences of his decision.

While president Bolsonaro is embracing the industry sector, in particular mining and agriculture, the department of tourism fears that eco-tourism will be taking a hit after much controversy around how Brasil is today managing its highly fragile and unique Amazon ecosystem.

Furthermore, human rights of indigenous peoples are at great risk as industry pushed deeper into pristine rain forest. This may cause much tension and even raise concerns about civil unrest, according to the departments of Human Rights and that of Justice and Public Security.

Last but not least, the department of Foreign Affairs is concerned about Brasil's relationship with particularly Europe and the United States, which have been moving towards sustainability, renewable energy and in general more "ecofriendly" society especially in the past few years. This may hit Brasil's foreign trade in the form of embargos or less favorable terms.
